Allied Motion’s Jim Hathaway takes area students on a tour of the company’s Owosso facility.

In celebration of National Manufacturing Day, held annually on the first Friday of October, students from across Shiawassee County gathered to learn about careers in modern manufacturing. The day began at the D’Mar Center with presentations from Lory Thayer of MiSTEM Network and Justin Horvath of the Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership (SEDP) outlining numerous career opportunities available for students locally. Following the presentations, students departed for tours of manufacturing businesses across the community. Hosts included:

  • Allied Motion, Motor Products
  • Aptek
  • CIE Newcor MTG
  • Compak Webcor
  • National Composites
  • Owosso Graphic Arts
  • Sakor Technologies
  • TiAL Sport
  • Tri-Mer Corporation

“We are thankful that so many businesses opened their doors to students for manufacturing day. Hopefully this is a first step to introducing students to opportunities with local manufacturing companies,” said Leyna Miller, Business and Community Liaison for the Shiawassee Regional Education Service District.

“Right now, in our county there are hundreds of available jobs in the manufacturing sector. It is exciting to see our school districts and the Shiawassee RESD working so hard to introduce students to opportunities to stay and build careers in our community,” said Horvath.

MFG Day is an annual national event held in communities across the country, and is supported by thousands of manufacturers as they host students, teachers, parents and community members at open houses, plant tours and more to change perceptions of manufacturing and highlight the high-tech and innovative companies that are solving tomorrow’s challenges today.
